Turkey

Happy Holidays everyone. First time in 25 years I haven't been with family for Thanksgiving. Not since my military days. I have to say I'm not liking it much. It's just Stacy and myself this year. We still planned a full turkey dinner, just smaller portions. Looks like I'm stuck eating a full can of cranberries by myself. We deep fried the turkey for several years. It was pretty good. Lots of work. Smoked turkey is where the money is at. So much flavor. A bit safer as well. I've enjoyed the time spent with family over the years. Some great memories. Looking at pictures from the past, it's fun to see the kids growing up. The brothers getting some grey hair. Me getting better looking with each year.  Speaking of family, I want to remind everyone of our brothers and sisters in our military stationed around the world, away from home and family. The military does a good job of providing a decent meal for the holidays. No place like home. You learn to appreciate comm...

Fish Tails

Image
Once upon a time, long, long ago, I went on a fishing trip with my buddy and his dad. My first time fishing on the ocean. It was early and still dark. A faint glow on the Eastern horizon. The dad backed up his boat down the pier to a crane. They lifted the boat off the trailer and into the water. We climbed down a ladder on the pier down to the boat and headed out to the mighty Pacific ocean.  Anyone remember the 70's show 'Rockford Files'? His trailer home on the beach and the diner called 'Alice'? That's the place we fished from. I remember eating a late lunch there when we got back. I'm pretty sure I was there first before the show started on TV. Maybe 5th or 6th grade. I went camping in Yosemite for several years as a kid. Always took a fishing pole and I swear I never remember catching a fish in the lakes and streams there. Freshwater fishing and trout was a complete mystery to me.  Deep sea fishing on the ocean was money. Captain of the boat always h...

Fountains of Youth

Comment from ' Life Guide ' post. Tahnee -  November 19, 2025 at 7:42 AM Thanks for the sage wisdom, Dad! Can't wait to continue getting older - haha. Even in my late 30s, I'm starting to notice that my body isn't functioning as well as it was 5-10 years ago. Gives me extra motivation to get moving more after this last baby. Maybe another marathon? I definitely appreciate and value the opportunity to get older, but when are they planning to release that miracle remedy that makes our bodies feel younger than they are?!? Anyone found the Fountain of Youth yet?   FOUND IT !! The magical elixir of youth. A few rounds of these bad boys and it's Friday night back in high school. Due diligence is advised. This powerful concoction can have the opposite effect of health and youth the following morning if consumed in excess. I'm not saying it's happened to me, but I've heard stories and rumors of dire ill effects.  The fountains are temporary relief. The good ...

Note to Self

Image
Notes, Lists, Post-its. I use every available resource to remember critical tasks. The problem is I forget where I wrote my reminder or worse, sometimes I can't find my notebook. I'm an old school pencil pusher. Why not use my phone you ask? That's nuts. I don't carry my phone with me. I occasionally lose that as well. Most of the bills are on auto-pay. No worries there. Running low on toothpaste, make a shopping list.  It's the odd jobs. Driving at sunset and discovering I need to clean the windshield. Porch light is out, I need to change the bulb. I will write a note and eventually get to it. When I find the time to work, I can't find my notes. I write a new note to find my old notes.  I have a notebook for cooking and recipes. Small details matter. I made enchiladas this past week. The last few times I made them I got lazy and skipped a step. You must soften the tortilla in hot oil before soaking them in the sauce. Extra work but it makes a huge d...

Life Guide

Image
I'm using this blog as my daily journal. It occurred to me that sharing these stories might be useful to the rest of you as to what you can expect in life as you get older at my age. I will be your life guide. No charge of course. The topic today is SLEEP. They say you need less as you get older. I will take as many hours of rest as I can get.  The challenge for me is my sleep patterns. I stay fairly active every day. Yesterday was a big day in the yard. Several hours scooping up leaves. By 7:30 pm, my eyes were drooping. Time to hit the sheets. Lying in silence is no bueno for me. I like background noise. Sometimes I listen to old radio shows from the 40s and 50s. I'm also a big fan of old sci-fi movies. Space rockets and giant monsters. Most nights, the distraction will quiet my mind and the sandman will haul me away. Other nights are most frustrating. My body is beat tired but my brain will flip to party mode. I toss and turn well after midnight. That is my menta...

Blog or not to blog

Image
9 Nov 2025   Here we go again. It's been a few years since my last effort to blog. I've dropped the ball on my personal journaling as well. I'm hoping this will motivate me to write again. So here goes. My Autumn battle with Mother Nature has begun. The weather the past few weeks has been sensational and the tree colors brilliant.  That's the calm before the storm. A cold front hit us last night with strong winds. I woke up this morning with my yard covered in leaves. I do a combination of blowing and mulching. I am surround by a forest and my leaf effort will last until after Xmas. Falling leaves are constant work at the house and a royal pain on the golf course. They do their best to keep the fairways clean, but it's non-stop. It's not unusual to loose at least three golf balls in a round, hidden under piles of leaves. It's very frustrating hitting a great tee shot and then not being able to find it. I played plenty of golf this summer. I found myself in t...
