Life Guide
I'm using this blog as my daily journal. It occurred to me that sharing these stories might be useful to the rest of you as to what you can expect in life as you get older at my age. I will be your life guide. No charge of course.
The topic today is SLEEP. They say you need less as you get older. I will take as many hours of rest as I can get.
The challenge for me is my sleep patterns. I stay fairly active every day. Yesterday was a big day in the yard. Several hours scooping up leaves. By 7:30 pm, my eyes were drooping. Time to hit the sheets. Lying in silence is no bueno for me. I like background noise. Sometimes I listen to old radio shows from the 40s and 50s. I'm also a big fan of old sci-fi movies. Space rockets and giant monsters. Most nights, the distraction will quiet my mind and the sandman will haul me away. Other nights are most frustrating. My body is beat tired but my brain will flip to party mode. I toss and turn well after midnight. That is my mental . . . on to the physical.
I'm speaking of this awesome body of mine with a million miles on it. I sleep on my side, which means on my shoulders. These guys are so worn out. Any day now I'm waiting for my arms to pop out and drop to the ground. So I sleep on one side for a bit until the pain in my shoulder wakes me up. I try to roll over but I have a dead whale for an arm. It's a circus act going back and forth all night.
Does anyone else use their leg and foot as a thermostat? You get a little warm under the blankets, stick your leg out. It gets chilly, tuck it back in. Don't even get me started on bathroom trips in the middle of the night.
Mornings are another horror story. As you get older, your ankle, knees, hips, and back joints seem to be held together with glue. Spend a few hours not moving and the glue sets. Getting out of bed takes real effort. Nothing bends. Stick man. It takes a few hours and lots of coffee to get the wheels greased and rolling.
Sleep is supposed to be restful. I have my good nights. It's not all bad. If I focus, I get to think about my kids and grandkids. Happy thoughts.
So yeah, as you get older, you have that to look forward to. I'm here to help.

Thanks for the sage wisdom, Dad! Can't wait to continue getting older - haha. Even in my late 30s, I'm starting to notice that my body isn't functioning as well as it was 5-10 years ago. Gives me extra motivation to get moving more after this last baby. Maybe another marathon? I definitely appreciate and value the opportunity to get older, but when are they planning to release that miracle remedy that makes our bodies feel younger than they are?!? Anyone found the Fountain of Youth yet?
